Sock Mallet Kick Drum

Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the Water Gong. Those proceedings were clandestine. We do however have a picture of the Sock Mallet used to create some nice tones on our recording of "The Crux." With the addition of some tasty maracas and goat toes, we finished up. Two more songs to go after this.

Back in the Studio

Matt and I have been hard at work in Speculator Studios with the Bootleg Recording Rig. We've got drum tracks done for 9 of the 12 songs on A Glorious Mess. So, we're finally making some progress. We've finished up all of the rockin' tunes and we're moving on to a few softer numbers. There is a chance we will also record an extra 4 tunes for an Advent album. That's right before Christmas for those of us who may be liturgically challenged. If we're gonna pull this off, I've got to finish writing the last song for the Right-Before-Christmas album before Sunday. The idea is to interweave a string quartet between the songs on that album. We'll see.

At any rate, A Glorious Mess has been pretty messy, but we're on our way. I should have my rig back home by the end of next week so I can start recording guitars and vocals while we do bass tracks.

Getting ready to walk out the door to record at Matt's. We're gonna have our first full day of recording. Hopefully we'll walk away with a lot of drums and bass. If you're a praying person, pray it goes well. Hopefully I'll post some video tonight.

This is a public confession. I can't title songs. I always come up with crappy titles. Maybe you can help. Melissa disagrees with me about the title of "You Are the Light of the World". She says it's too long and should simply be "Light of the World." I say, no. "Light of the World" is simply overused and lacks definition. She says, you're wrong. So, we find ourselves at an impasse. What do you think? A demo of it is in the player. Give it a listen. My other suggestion is "You Are the Light". Perhaps that is shorter and not so overused. Or maybe we should just call it "Bill". It's a friendly name. If it needed to go out it could call itself William on formal occasions. All three of you that read this blog can vote with your comments.

We did some more recording this afternoon, tracking bass and drums together. It's sounding really good. I think we got bass and drums for You Are the Light of the World done. All the work of building sound panels is paying off. Tracking with great musicians really helps too. Hopefully we'll have bass and drums finished by the end of the month.

After a long recording hiatus, the Bootleg Preachers are back! After the purchase of even more equipment and the construction of several sound panels (not to mention the crazy rig that suspends them over the drums) we're recording again. It sounds even better than our last space. I'll post some pictures later. Peace.

Test Mix

There's finally a test mix of the first song done for the album. Matt tracked the drums last week. There's just a little reverb and compression on them now. I layed down the rest of the tracks tonight, so the bass stinks. Ron will redo that later. I was really just trying to see how the drums fit into the mix, and I must say I'm pretty stinking happy. A big beyahhh to Mr. Skaggs on the trap set. It's the first song in the player, so you should already be listening to it.

The Edges Are Fading

There's another new song written for the upcoming album in the player. Check out track 3 in the player, The Edges Are Fading. This song came out of some thoughts from a couple of seminary classes this last semester. Church History and World religions got me thinking about how absurd our claims for exclusive rights on truth and God are.

The Title Cut

I'm still recording some demos for the band. Here's the title track for the album, A Glorious Mess, over in the player. It's the first demo I've cut with my new mic preamps. Great stuff made by Old School Audio and Buzz Audio. I bought them from Atlas Pro Audio (the only place you can get OSA stuff). They have the best customer service ever. Seriously.

I've been listening through my new studio monitors and I'm having a lot more phase problems than ever before. Maybe it's just because I can hear more nuance. Well, have a listen...
